America Can Do Better

How are these two men the best America has to offer? Joe Biden let his son Hunter sell their name across the planet, receiving extravagant sums to “advise” moguls on topics he knew nothing about. Ukrainian gas executives and Chinese energy officials knew what they were buying. They were paying for access. Paying for favoritism. No wonder they considered it bribery.

The president’s patronizing response: “Where’s the money?” Well, the money was paid to your son, Joe. We know Hunter used at least some of that cash to pay expenses for the family. He even complained about being the Biden clan piggybank. Your brother, your daughter-in-law, everyone around you was benefiting.

Joe hides behind fig leaves: He was never paid directly (allegedly), and he never discussed business with his son (almost certainly a lie). The liberal press lets him get away with it, though it’s unethical on its face.

Then there’s Donald Trump. Used to believing that the rules don’t apply to him, the ex-prez ignored the law and mocked the authorities. And guess what: They called him on it.

This is not the Alvin Bragg case, which we have noted is a politically driven sideshow. Trump admits to taking classified documents and obstructing the government’s efforts to get them back, claiming he had the “right” to do so even when he didn’t.

Why did he take them? To serve his own ego. To show starstruck Mar-a-Lago guests how important he used to be. It’s shamefully irresponsible, and so, so petty. He rails against the indictment, yet would’ve avoided one had he just given back the documents. But he couldn’t concede because everything for him is about “winning” or “losing,” not what’s right. His actions here, and on Jan. 6, 2021, show how unfit he is to be president again.

Yet here we are. Two unscrupulous men as the frontrunners for the highest office in the land. Sleepwalking to a Trump-Biden rematch. What have we done to offend the gods?

The Democrat side of the ledger occupies the more shameful position. Polls show even their own voters don’t want Biden to run again, yet he ignores them. And no other prominent Democrat has the courage to step up as an alternative.

Republican voters, meanwhile, have a wide field of qualified candidates who can make this country better. We hope they don’t choose Trump, a moral vacuum with a track record of losing elections. But at least they’ve been given a choice, and not had elites foist it upon them.

Our hope as we barrel through 2023: That neither candidate is the nominee. It’s time for fresh perspectives, younger faces and a clean slate from casual corruption. Give Americans a candidate they actually want to vote for, and not just the least-worst.
