Sad death of hero, 14

A teenager died Thursday, two days after diving into an icy Colorado lake to rescue three friends.

Dyllan Whittenburg rushed to help pals who had fallen through the ice on Crystal Lake, but he became trapped under ice in the frigid waters, his family said. Neighbors used hoses, extension cords and ropes to save the other three, West Metro Fire Rescue said, but a dive team was needed to rescue Whittenburg.

He was taken to a hospital where he turned 14 on Wednesday, one day before his death.
