Docs say no further knee damage found

It’s the best-case scenario for Zach Wilson and the Jets.

There were no surprises during the second-year quarterback’s knee surgery, which was a success and confirmed the initial diagnosis of a bone bruise and a meniscus tear on Tuesday, The Post’s Brian Costello confirmed.

Despite uncertainty surrounding the timeline for Wilson’s return, the Jets can exhale knowing for sure that the 23-year-old didn’t suffer a season-ending injury like an ACL tear, which was originally feared. The expectation is he will miss just two to four weeks, meaning it’s possible he won’t miss any regular-season games.

However, the Jets will likely err on the side of caution and go with veteran quarterback Joe Flacco in their season opener against the Ravens at MetLife Stadium on Sept. 11. Wilson will definitely miss the final two preseason games against the Falcons and Giants.

“It is comforting,” head coach Robert Saleh said of having Flacco as a backup. “I’ll shout out Mike White, too. I’ve said it 100 times, I think we’ve got three starting quarterbacks. Joe has proven throughout his time that he’s a winner.”

Wilson, the second-overall draft pick last year, injured his right knee on a scramble in the first quarter of the team’s 24-21 win over the Eagles in the preseason opener Friday. After getting a second opinion, Wilson underwent arthroscopic surgery in Los Angeles on Tuesday.

The Jets needed some positive injury news after losing Mekhi Becton for the season due to a fractured kneecap he suffered during practice last week.

But the sky isn’t falling just yet. Wilson is expected to return at some point early this season, and the Jets hope he can pick up where he left off last year. Despite an underwhelming rookie campaign, Wilson improved toward the end of the 2021 season before finishing with nine touchdowns and 11 interceptions in 13 games.

This is the second knee injury of Wilson’s NFL career after he missed four games with a PCL sprain in his the same knee last season.
