Lots of intrigue

AN auction of Nelson Mandela’s possessions is off, and the scratched sale has kicked up an international incident. “We had a major controversy,” Arlan Ettinger, president of Guernsey’s auction house, said of the canceled sale. Though many lots were put up by Mandela’s own family to fund a memorial at his gravesite, Guernsey’s was contacted by the South African Heritage Resources Agency, which “determined that these items were potential national treasures,” we’re told. The agency and the Mandela family now both want the items, leaving Guernsey’s in the middle. UNESCO is even offering to mediate.
