Log on for free tests from WH

The federal government rolled out a “beta” version of its Web site allowing Americans to order free at-home COVID-19 tests Tuesday, one day earlier than previously announced. Americans can go to COVIDtests.gov and enter

their name and mailing information to order tests four at a time. Orders are limited to one per address, with no allowances for multifamily homes, in order to “promote broad access,” according to the administration. No proof of ID, credit card or health insurance information is needed.

The tests will begin shipping

out in late January, between seven and 12 days after initial orders are processed — meaning many Americans will receive deliveries of the coveted tests long after cases of COVID-19’s highly transmissible Omicron variant have begun to plummet.

White House press secretary Jen Psaki said Tuesday

the Web site was in “beta phase” and would operate at “limited capacity” ahead of the official launch Wednesday morning.

“Every Web site launch, in our view, comes with risk and we can’t guarantee there won’t be a bug or two,” she said, “but the best test teams across the administration and the Postal Service are working hard to make this a success.”

The launch is part of the Biden administration’s commitment to provide 1 billion at-home tests to Americans.

For households with more than four people, the Web site urges people to use free testing sites around the country.
