Cheers! Queen fulfilled worker’s wish to a tea

Kerry J. Byrne

A good monarch serves her subjects, but usually not as literally as Queen Elizabeth once did for a workman fixing a desk at a royal home.

The sitcom-worthy tale is shared by Kevin Andrews,

a royal upholsterer who worked for the late Queen Mother in a documentary called “Secrets of the Royal Palaces,” The Sun reports.

“[A] builder was dismantling a desk . . . so he could not see who was making the offer when Elizabeth asked him if he would like a cup of tea,” Andrews said.

The man replied gruffly:

“Yeah. In a mug. Two sugars. Builder’s tea. I don’t want any of that nonsense I had the last time I was here, all that fine china and all that saucer stuff.”

Her Royal Highness fulfilled the man’s demands, returned with the tea and told the workman that it was on the table.

Only then, Andrews said, the man “looked up [and] saw the queen leaving the room.”
