Lawyer: Nixon got cheated

Conor Skelding

More than 47 years after the Watergate scandal forced Richard Nixon’s resignation, one of the former president’s defense lawyers has claimed that Tricky Dick didn’t receive due process because “the prosecutors cheated.”

Geoff Shepard, 76, has filed a complaint of attorney misconduct with the Justice Department.

He revealed the Oct. 2 filing last week. Among its charges: Prosecutors improperly met privately with trial judges, even “rehearsing” court proceedings; suppressed exculpatory evidence; and lied to the grand jury.

And when they were done, they took confidential files in violation of DOJ policy, claimed Shepard, author of “The Nixon Conspiracy.”

Shepard says that over the years, through Freedom of Information Act requests and archival visits, he has “uncovered piles of documents that are very damning.”

All are posted on his Web site, Shepard on Watergate.

Shepard has requested a meeting to present his findings to DOJ officials.

“If the Department of Justice hears me out, lets me make this presentation — I think they are duty-bound to go into court and say they can’t stand behind these convictions,” he said.
