COLOMBIA

Colombia wildlife authorities have stepped up their campaign to sterilize Pablo Escobar’s hippos, which have multiplied into the biggest herd outside their natural habitat in Africa since the drug lord was killed in 1993.

Government veterinarians have managed to sterilize 24 of the 80 hippos. They have pushed away much of the region’s other species and are a danger to farmers and ranchers alongside the waterways where they roam.
