Kiffin nearly struck by golf ball as Vols fans pelt victorious Ole Miss

No. 13 Mississippi held off Tennessee 31-26 on Saturday night in Knoxville, Tenn. after Rebels coach Lane Kiffin barely avoided being by hit by a golf ball as Volunteers fans pelted the field with objects in the chaotic final minutes.

Ole Miss stopped Tennessee a yard shy of a first down on a fourthand-24 pass with just over a minute left. After that play, and the review that confirmed the spot of the ball, Tennessee fans pelted the field with objects. Tennessee’s cheerleaders, dance team and band were ordered out of the stadium and police cleared the student section.

“I don’t know if I’m more excited that we found a way to win or that I didn’t get hit with the golf balls that they were throwing at me,” former Vols coach Kiffin told ESPN, holding up a yellow golf ball. Play resumed after about a 20-minute delay.

Matt Corral threw for 231 yards and two touchdowns and ran for 195 yards for Mississippi (5-1, 2-1 SEC). Hendon Hooker threw for 233 yards and a touchdown and for Tennessee (4-3, 2-2) and ran for 108 yards and a score.

In Cincinnati, Jerome Ford rushed for a career-high 189 yards and four touchdowns, helping the No. 3 Bearcats (6-0, 2-0 AAC) roll past the Knights (3-3, 1-2).

Michigan State 20, Indiana 15

In Bloomington, Ind., Matt Coghlin’s 51-yard field goal to open the second half gave No. 10 Michigan State the lead and Payton Thorne’s 12-yard touchdown pass provided the margin the Spartans (7-0, 4-0 Big Ten) needed to hold off the Hoosiers (2-4, 0-3).

Auburn 38, Arkansas 23

In Fayetteville, Ark., Bo Nix threw for 292 yards and accounted for three touchdowns, Auburn’s defense contributed a touchdown and a key fourth down stop in the third quarter and the Tigers (5-2, 2-1 SEC) handed the No. 17 Razorbacks (4-3, 1-3) their third straight loss.

Baylor 38, BYU 24

In Waco, Texas, Abram Smith ran for 188 yards with three touchdowns, Baylor linebacker and part-time fullback Dillon Doyle scored on both of his offensive touches, and the Bears (6-1) beat the No. 19 Cougars (5-2), future Big 12 foes.

LSU 49, Florida 42

In Baton Rouge, La., Tyrion Davis-Price ran for an LSU-record 287 yards and had three touchdowns, and the Tigers’ (4-3, 2-2 SEC) banged-up defense came up with four interceptions against the No. 20 Gators (4-3, 2-3).
