Effin’ Maine car-tag law

Removing obscenities from license plates in Maine isn't going to happen overnight, even though a law banning profanities goes into effect Monday.

Currently, there are license plates with f-bombs, references to anatomy and sex acts, and one that says simply, “F--KY0U" — spelled out.

Rule-making to ensure the law still protects First Amendment rights could take months, Secretary of State Shenna Bellows said.

A majority of states ban profane plates. But Maine became the “wild, wild, wild west of vanity license plates” when it dropped its review process in 2015.
