Mathieu van der Poel goes head over heels in the mountain bike race, but van der Poel, who wore the yellow jersey for six days as the leader of the Tour de France earlier this month, avoided serious injury. Britain’s Tom Pidcock won gold. Pidcock, who splits time between the road and mountain biking, won the World Cup race at Nove Mesto earlier this year to become an Olympic favorite. But he was hit by a car and broke his collarbone on a training ride in June, and some wondered whether he’d have the same legs for the Tokyo Games.
