Homeless inn-&-out resumes

The city began moving homeless people from hotels to shelters on Monday after a judge stalled the process due to a challenge by activists.

Videos posted by advocates showed school buses rolling up to several hotels, including The Lucerne on the Upper West Side, among the sites where thousands of homeless people had been living since about a year ago amid the pandemic.

The residents had started going back into shelters in June, but the evictions were halted by a federal judge earlier this month. The Legal Aid Society filed a motion accusing the city of violating the rights of people with medical and mental-health problems.

The city Department of Social Services said it had since made “necessary adjustments” to comply with the ruling, including giving residents seven-day notice of transfer and allowing them to request facilities that would meet their health needs.

About 5,000 people were still being housed in 37 emergency hotel shelters prior to Monday’s evictions, according to advocates. Some 3,000 people that were staying in 23 hotels had already been moved.
