MLB: Astros roll to 8th straight win

Jake Odorizzi and the Houston bullpen took a bid for a combined no-hitter into the eighth inning, eventually settling for a 10-2 victory over the Orioles in Baltimore that marked the Astros’ eighth straight win.

Bobby Bradley and Josh Naylor homered — helping the Indians overcome the loss of Aaron Civale, who exited with two outs in the fifth because of a right middle finger injury — in a 4-0 win over the Cubs at Wrigley Field. The right-hander leads the major leagues with 10 wins.

In Arlington, Texas, Andy Ibañez and Jose Trevino hit three-run homers and Texas ended a six-game losing streak by beating the Athletics, 8-3.

ETC.: Leiter’s 15 K’s not enough

Jack Leiter’s dominant 15-strikeout performance was spoiled by Terrell Tatum’s fifth-inning home run and allowed North Carolina State (37-18) to take control of its College World Series bracket with a 1-0 win over Vanderbilt (46-16) in Omaha, Neb.

Papu Gómez scored in the 10th minute as Argentina beat Paraguay 1-0 in Sao Paulo and secured its place in the Copa America knockout stage. The game also gave Lionel Messi a record 147th cap for the national team, equalling the mark of retired defender Javier Mascherano.

Chile, which also advanced to the quarterfinals, is second in the group with five points after the 1-1 draw with Uruguay.
