Culture critic: Canada’s Woke Regime
— Compiled by The Post Editorial Board
To understand “the endgame of the woke revolution,” advises Scott Yenor at First Things, look north: “The woke regime is most advanced in Canada, where officials call it ‘multiculturalism.’ ” Canadian premier Pierre Trudeau (father of Justin) developed the idea in the 1960s, but as Hugh Donald Forbes’ book “Multiculturalism in Canada” shows, as “its logic worked out,” multiculturalism “became increasingly hostile to the traditional understanding of individual rights and Canada’s old self-understanding.” Multiculturalism’s freedom comes from “human-rights commissions,” its equality from “an increasingly deceptive quota system.” With “accommodation and silence” at its heart, in fact, “Trudeau’s hopeful vision . . . promises despotism.”
