‘Fatally stomps pet birds’

By LEE BROWN leebrown@nypost.com

A naked man allegedly broke into a California house, smiled “like a serial killer” and fatally stomped two pet birds after he was confronted by the home owner.

Mat Sabz discovered the intruder, who had put on a pair of Sabz’s shorts, in his house in a gated community of LA’s Bel Air neighborhood last Thursday.

Coming “eye to eye” with him as he looked down a staircase, Sabz told Fox 11 TV in LA, “[I] immediately raised my voice and pointed at him, saying, ‘Hey! What are you doing?’ ”

“This is my house,” the stranger replied. “What are you doing here? I’m going to call the police right now.”

Sabz said, “Right away, I realized that this is not a person that you want to engage with any further.”

As the man started coming

up the steps, Sabz — who was alone — ran into the master bedroom, where he safely jumped off a balcony and called police.

The intruder then made himself at home — sitting on the couch, trying on Sabz’s clothes and skinny dipping in the pool — all captured on security cameras.

The intrusion took a sinister turn after the man spotted the family’s parakeets, Sabz said.

“First, he smiled at them like a serial killer, saying, ‘Hey, birdies,’ ” he said.

“Then he put his hands on them, dropped them, and stomped on them.”

His young children found the dead pets when they returned home.

“When you see what this guy did to the animals — we don’t know what he would have done to our family,” Sabz told KTLA-TV.

The suspect was finally detained by private security before police arrived.

Officials have identified him as Paul K. Kiyan, 34.

He was arrested on suspicion of burglary and is being held at a Los Angeles County jail in lieu of $50,000 bail, official said.
