‘Protest’ discipline urged vs. 39 cops

Craig McCarthy

The Civilian Complaint Review Board has recommended discipline against 39 NYPD members, including police brass, over their responses during last year’s George Floyd protests.

The city’s police watchdog issued an update Monday on its investigation into the NYPD’s handling of the protests, saying it has so far substantiated 26 complaints of misconduct.

The recommended discipline includes departmental charges against 14 cops — including Enrico Lauretta, for discourtesy and offensive language after he flashed a white-power sign during a June demonstration, the CCRB says.

Honchos include Deputy Inspector Elias Nikas, who the board found made a retaliatory arrest, and Deputy Chief Michael Pilecki, against whom there were substantiated charges of improper seizure of property, CCRB records show.

The CCRB also said it’s still awaiting interviews from officers in 38 of 147 open investigations.

The majority of the charges involved complaints of force and abuse of authority, according to the update.

NYPD Commissioner Dermot Shea has final say on the reprimands, but has said he will follow the disciplinary guidelines.
