METS HOPEFUL AS deGROM GOES TO IL

By MIKE PUMA

Jacob deGrom will take a break to give his body a rest. The Mets announced Monday that the right-hander will be placed on the 10-day injured list with right-side tightness after an MRI exam performed in that area was clean, according to the team. The IL stint will be retroactive to Monday.

DeGrom departed his start against the Diamondbacks after five innings Sunday because of what manager Luis Rojas described as lower-back tightness on the right side. DeGrom had been scratched from his previous start with swelling in his right lat. DeGrom is 3-2 with a 0.68 ERA and 0.600 WHIP in six starts this season.

With two days off this week, the Mets can survive with only four starters through Monday if they so choose. Marcus Stroman, Taijuan Walker, David Peterson and Joey Lucchesi (or an opener ahead of him) would be in position to pitch until the Mets need a fifth starter in Atlanta next Tuesday.

Options might include Jordan Yamamoto, who entered in relief for the Mets last week (behind opener Miguel Castro) for the nightcap of a doubleheader in St. Louis. Yamamoto was optioned to Triple-A Syracuse the following day. The Mets have also received solid results from Sean ReidFoley, a potential candidate to pitch in a multiple-inning role as a starter. Robert Gsellman is another member of the bullpen with starting experience.

The Mets were hopeful Carlos Carrasco would be a rotation option at this point, but the right-hander’s rehab from a torn right hamstring has decelerated in the last week and he was recently transferred to the 60-day injured list, meaning he won’t be available before May 31.

Noah Syndergaard remains on the IL rehabbing from Tommy John surgery and likely won’t return before mid-June. Seth Lugo, who is on the comeback from surgery to remove a bone spur from his right elbow, could be an option by the end of the month, more likely for the bullpen.
