McCullers will Sho’ ’em how it’s done in Houston

By GREG PETERSON

It has been a strange season thus far for the Angels. Their best starting pitcher in terms of ERA has been Shohei Ohtani, but his command might be an issue on Tuesday against the Astros.

Ohtani across four starts has a 2.41 ERA with 14.5 strikeouts per nine innings and the team is 3-1 in his those games. But Ohtani has walked 19 batters in 18 2/3 innings and has failed to go past five innings in any start this season.

The lack of length will force a bullpen that ranks 28th in the majors with a 5.32 ERA into more action than it might like against Astros hitters who are striking out on the lowest percentage of their atbats in the majors.

Astros starter Lance McCullers Jr. has been significantly better at home than on the road. He has a 20-8 record with a 2.67 ERA and 1.093 WHIP in Houston compared to a 14-18 record with a 4.79 ERA and 1.431 WHIP elsewhere.

The Astros are 8-3 in their past 11 home games and are 4-2 overall against the Angels this season. They should continue those winning ways on Tuesday.

THE PLAY: Astros, -137.
