T.Sq. needs DC: Hizz

Mayor de Blasio on Monday shunted blame for the Times Square shooting to Congress, insisting the feds need to do more on gun control — as new NYPD statistics showed gun violence in the city is sky-high.

When asked about Saturday’s bloodshed at the Crossroads of the World, which left a 4-yearold girl and two other innocent bystanders wounded, Hizzoner responded, “We need Congress to help us to stop the flow of guns into New York City.

“Look, this kind of thing should not happen in our city,’’ said the mayor — whose administration controversially disbanded the NYPD’s plainclothes anti-crime unit in 2020.

“We got a lot of work to do. But we know what works, and the NYPD is out there constantly making adjustments, sending officers where they’re needed most.”

His comments came as the NYPD recorded 36 shooting incidents with 43 victims during the seven-day period ending Sunday — up from 15 incidents and 16 victims over the same time frame last year.

New Yorkers endured a bloody April overall, with almost three times the number of shootings compared with last year.

So far this year, 451 shootings have been reported across the five boroughs, with 505 victims, up 86.6 percent from 2020 and double the numbers recorded in 2019, data show.

Murders are up by 27 percent from last year, which recorded 115 homicides compared with 146 this year, according to the data.
